LEE COUNTY: Part 1

Did we say forty? Yep. That’s twenty this month and twenty next. Even then, we wouldn’t begin to suggest that every cool Lee County sight, sound, and story could be contained in a magazine, let alone a list of forty, but here are a few things every Lee Countian ought to know, visit, or brag about.
What's in your bag?

So what does Lee County’s fitness bunch lug around in their purses? Will there be life lessons here? Or just a heck of a lot of lip gloss? We asked four women from Health Plus at East Alabama Medical Center to reveal the contents of their handbags.
A-Tisket, A-Tasket

I hated driving vacations as a child. Grandpa insisted on covering a certain number of miles each day and, by George, we would cover them. But my Irish Grandma made it all worthwhile with the fabulous road meals she prepared.
The incredible ballooning flaws

My teenage daughter, Caitlin, looks in the mirror and doesn’t see her beautiful brown eyes, or her silky, light brown hair. Instead, she sees (gasp) acne. “It’s all over my shoulders!” she says. I take her to the dermatologist for what I’ve dubbed “invisible acne.” I can’t see it, but Caitlin feels it. I justify the thirty-dollar co-pay as a small price for renewed self-esteem. Why are we so fascinated by our flaws?
Your yard is your canvas

Light, space, line, form, size, color, texture, and pattern. These are the elements of design, the basic tools every designer keeps in mind – Kate Spade, Marc Jacobs, as well as floral arrangers and garden designers. Let’s see how they relate to landscape.
Asset management

Summertime means swimsuit season. And that means furrowed brows, exasperated sighs, crash diets fueled by desperation, and trips to the gym. What if swimsuit season could be less frustrating, and looking great in a bathing suit didn’t require daily five-mile runs and all-liquid diets? Is there hope for the athletically disinclined?
Full body contact

“Have you had a hug today?” That was a popular bumper sticker a few years ago. And no wonder. This form of human contact can soothe the soul like no other elixir. The experts tell us human touch is vital to mental health. So hugs are good, right?
Emotion rules

First you were a little kid. You didn’t know much. Wondrous things ran through your brain, but few of them were facts. You examined a dragonfly. You smashed an anthill. You hit someone because they hit you. As you got older, you acquired some facts: F-A-R-T spelled the funniest word on Earth. Dogs will sit under the table and help you eat nasty foods. Look before you cross the street. Don’t hit someone even if they hit you.
Hot books

When I was a kid, library trips felt like wonderful shopping excursions that left my allowance intact. Picking out the two perfect books — my permitted limit in those days — was heavenly torture. Which ones would be best? What if I picked a bad one? But I was lucky. Mrs. Peck the librarian recognized me as a regular and let me know when something especially tasty came in.
LEE LIFE: Noon tunes

Perfect weather brought a crowd to Noon Tunes in the Opelika Courthouse Square May 21. Share some of the fun and enjoyment by taking a look at the pictures. Our Lee photographer stopped in to capture the event on film.
