Chili Anyone

Heida Olin's picture

Chili season starts at my house as soon as it gets the least bit cool. I have a gigantic pot that I make a double doubled recipe and if there are not too many mouths to feed we may be able to have another meal out of it. Now my white chili is pretty awesome as well and although I rarely make as much of that as I do of my traditional chili, it never fails to get "scarffed" (a word I took from my sons' vocabulary). This has been a great year for both kinds of chili. Here it is approaching the end of February and I'm still making enormous amounts of the stuff.

Say ahhhh

Looking for a little indulgence, some professional pampering? Lee County spas have you covered, whether you’re longing for a massage, hoping for a golden tan, or in the market for glowing skin. Although spas often offer similar services, we asked each spa to recommend a favorite.

What's in your bag?

By mid-January the Auburn University women's basketballteam was undefeated, ranking No. 6 in the women's basketball coaches poll. So, we wondered, would the bags of head coach Nell Fortner and her assistants reveal the secret to Tiger success?

Couch captives

My family ruminates on what we should do, but we still end up sitting on the couch. Where did the energy go, we wonder, as we finish the football season and head into spring cleaning. Maybe it is time to embrace the foods that bring us energy. So I decided that good-tasting food that provides energy and nutrition shall now adorn our dinner table.

Good Taste!

You don’t have to be a Green Giant to grow your own small foothold in the eco-friendly trend of eating locally. Plants that add flavor in the kitchen can add to the landscape too. You don’t need to plow a rectangle in your back yard (or front yard, as more and more seem to be doing) to incorporate a harvest into your design.

That’s a good thing

Now I bowl on the Wii. I’m the best Clue detective around. I race my kids to the nearest roller coaster. Then scream my head off.

Save your memory?

A couple of years ago I spent the afternoon with a researcher whose specialty is cognition in older adults. Over the course of a few hours, she detailed the many ways her work proved that aging comes with a corresponding loss in mental capacity. I’ve had cheerier interviews with coroners.

Fueling for Life

As we mature, gaining wisdom, responsibilities, stress and deadlines, we gradually dissociate eating from hunger. We eat because it’s lunchtime, or because it’s there.

Staying connected

Two years ago Ki Seroka’s peaceful tubing excursion with her friend Jinx nearly turned into a disaster. It was a perfect day on the Cahaba River south of Birmingham.

Homemade beauty

You are a busy woman. I know, I know, understatement of the year. Between chauffeuring kids to every activity in town, going to the office, running errands – groceries, dry cleaning, buying new socks for your husband because he ruined his good ones … again – the idea of a day to yourself for pampering may seem laughable. Upon reflection, it becomes absolutely hilarious.
